As a leading physician for advanced therapeutic endoscopy, Abid brings his patients the benefit of his extensive experience in working with complex inflammatory bowel disease patients, and in the use of biologic therapy.
Abid is a consultant physician and gastroenterologist with special interest in advanced therapeutic endoscopy and pancreatico-biliary disease. He provides services such as Endoscopic Ultrasonography and ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde CholangioPancreatography) and performs a variety of advanced luminal therapeutic endoscopy, including EMR (Endoscopic Mucosal Resection) for large flat colonic/caecal polypoid lesion, colonic stenting and colonic stricture dilation. He also carries out metal stent insertion and EMR/ESD (Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection) for dysplastic oesophageal and gastric lesions.
Abid undertook his medical training in the UK, becoming a Member of the Royal college of Physicians in 2001. He then completed his training and obtained his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Gastroenterology/ General Internal Medicine in 2008. Since then he has worked as a consultant gastroenterologist in the UK and Canada, before moving to New Zealand, where he is now Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at Tauranga General Hospital, and has been Chairman for the Regional Colonoscopy Project Working Group.
As part of his medical training, Abid spent one year at the Queen Elizabeth Liver Transplant Unit, Birmingham, UK, where he had extensive exposure to the management of acute and chronic liver disease, providing pre-transplant and post-transplant care. During his practice as a consultant, he continued to provide care for and deal with a wide variety of acute and chronic liver disease patients.
Abid has found a good balance in his work: he provides comprehensive gastroenterology services for his patients, and he continues to develop his knowledge of advanced therapeutic endoscopy, performing upper and lower GI therapeutic endoscopies. In addition to his clinical work, Abid undertakes teaching, publishing and research.
He takes particular pleasure in his teaching role and in training doctors in his specialised skills of gastroenterology and in procedures such as Endoscopic Mucosal Resection.
Abid and his wife, son and daughter enjoy life in Tauranga, especially outdoor activities such as surfing, skiing, camping, fishing and diving.
