Two Grace Hospital surgeons have been recognised for their services to surgery.
Mr Chris Dawe has been awarded the ESR Hughes Award for his distinguished contribution to surgery. This award is conferred to a recipient twice yearly, and is awarded by fellow surgeons of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS).

Chris has a special interest in paediatric orthopaedic surgery, deformity correction and general orthopaedics such as joint replacement surgery. Chris has recently resigned from his role at Tauranga Public Hospital but is continuing with private surgery at Grace Hospital. Grace Hospital management and staff offer congratulations to Chris on this award, and thank him for the ongoing care he provides for our patients.

Associate Professor Peter Gilling has received two awards, the first being an award from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. The RACS Surgical Research Award recognises the contribution of a pre-eminent surgical scientist who has made significant contributions to surgical research. A second award is from the Société Internationale d’Urologie, and is an international award recognising a distinguished career in Urology. Peter is a regular recipient of accolades for his work and in particular for his research in urological matters.

Grace Hospital provides an excellent opportunity for surgical specialists to advance their skills and expertise with modern operating theatres and ongoing investment in the latest technology for operating equipment. The hospital also invests heavily in staff development, ensuring that all employees have ongoing education to be able to perform their roles at a high level.

An example of this is the programme to develop nurse practitioners, which will see two interns reaching the end of their three year development programme later this year, and potential registration as Nurse Practitioners with the NZ Nursing Council.

It is a privilege to have surgeons like Chris and Peter as part of our team at Grace Hospital, and all staff would like to add their congratulations to them both on these awards.
