Your child’s surgeryWe understand that it can be difficult for both child and the family when surgery is necessary, and we do everything we can to make your experience as stress-free as possible.
A hospital visit prior to surgery can familiarise your child with the surroundings and put their minds at ease. Parents and carers are encouraged to stay with their child. Favourite toys are welcome too!
Children usually wear their own pyjamas to theatre, but we also have some really cute children’s theatre gowns. We encourage one parent to accompany their child as they undergo the anaesthetic and be with them again when they wake up.
We provide a portable DVD player with a small selection of DVD’s for children - please ask a nurse to bring the machine to your room. We also have selection of toys and childrens TV channels.
Watch our video: What to expect if your child is having surgery
Shot from a child's point of view so kids can watch it too, the video follows a little girl's visit to Grace to have surgery. She talks about what to pack, pre-operation checks, being put to sleep before surgery, and what to expect afterward - including rest and recovery time, ice cream and jelly, and then home time.
