After your Surgery

Children as patients

Your child's surgery We understand that it can be difficult for both child and the family when surgery is necessary, and we do everything we can to make your experience as stress-free as possible.

A hospital visit prior to surgery can familiarise your child with the surroundings and put their minds at ease. Parents and carers are encouraged to stay with their child. Favourite toys are welcome too!

Children usually wear their own pyjamas to theatre, but we also have some really cute children's theatre gowns. We encourage one parent to accompany their child as they undergo the anaesthetic and be with them again when they wake up.

We provide a portable DVD player with a small selection of DVD's for children - please ask a nurse to bring the machine to your room. We also have selection of toys and childrens TV channels.

When you get home
We strongly advise you have a capable adult with you for the first 24 hours following discharge from hospital. It's important that you rest during this time so it's helpful to have additional support.

It's normal to feel some degree of pain or discomfort after an operation - your surgeon and nurses will explain what is to be expected based on your procedure.  Please also feel free to call us if you have any queries.

Please call your surgeon or doctor immediately if you experience

  • increased pain or excessive swelling around the wound
  • nausea or vomiting
  • chest pain or breathing trouble
  • fever or chills
In the event of an emergency call an ambulance (111).
