After your Surgery

Nurse Practioner

Nurse Practitioners

Grace Hospital employs Nurse Practitioners to provide advanced care for patients having surgery and support our nursing and medical team. Nurse practitioners have advanced education, clinical training and the demonstrated competence and legal authority to practise beyond the level of a registered nurse. Nurse Practitioners are able to provide comprehensive assessment, treatment interventions, order and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests and prescribe medicines.

A Nurse Practitioner may visit you during your stay at Grace to check your progress. They are able to manage chronic conditions, common and acute post-operative issues to optimise your care and recovery. The Nurse Practitioner works collaboratively with your Surgeon, Anaesthetist and Nursing team.

When you get home
We strongly advise you have a capable adult with you for the first 24 hours following discharge from hospital. It's important that you rest during this time so it's helpful to have additional support.

It's normal to feel some degree of pain or discomfort after an operation - your surgeon and nurses will explain what is to be expected based on your procedure.  Please also feel free to call us if you have any queries.

Please call your surgeon or doctor immediately if you experience

  • increased pain or excessive swelling around the wound
  • nausea or vomiting
  • chest pain or breathing trouble
  • fever or chills
In the event of an emergency call an ambulance (111).
