About

John, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, enjoys all aspects of his work with particular interest and expertise in managing trauma to the teeth, jaws and facial bones; jaw joint surgery (TMJ); and correcting jaw deformities and discrepancies (Orthognathic Surgery).

Born and educated in New Zealand, John completed his Dental Degree at Otago University, going on to work as a dentist at Christchurch Hospital for two years, where he became interested in surgical aspects of dentistry.

He returned to the University of Otago for the next two years as a member of staff in the Oral Surgery Department, lecturing and training in Oral surgery, after which he completed a Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and a Medical Degree, both from the University of Otago.

He worked as a medical doctor for two years, before taking up Higher Surgical Training Posts in Oral and Maxillofacial for a year in Auckland. He went on to train in England at the East Grinstead Maxillofacial Unit for two years. This famous and prestigious unit gave John valuable experience in one of his particular interests within his specialty, Reconstructive Surgery of the face and jaws.

On his return to New Zealand in 2004, John and an associate formed Tauranga OMS.

A large part of John’s practice at OMS includes the diagnosis and management of pain of the mouth, jaws and face, including salivary gland tissues, the surgical extraction of teeth, and the placement of dental implants.
