Consultant Upper GI, Bariatric and General Surgeon at Tauranga Specialist Centre and Grace Hospital

Daniel is a New Zealand-trained General Surgeon and Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He has spent the last 15 years working in all major surgical centres throughout New Zealand. He has experience in a variety of surgical specialties, including four years of practice in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, developing skills now especially useful in his practice of skin cancer surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction.

After completing his surgical training, Daniel moved to the United Kingdom to undertake further specialist training at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, working with internationally recognised experts at Scotland’s busiest cancer hospital. Daniel held the ‘International Medical Training Fellowship in Oesophagogastric Surgery’ for 18 months before taking a Specialist Consultant position within the hospital’s dedicated Oesophagogastric Unit. During this period of subspecialisation Daniel gained expertise in:

  • Cancer surgery of the stomach and oesophagus (including Barrett’s Oesophagus)
  • Weight-loss (Bariatric) surgery
  • Diagnosis and management of oesophageal motility disorders
  • Anti-reflux surgery
  • Complex hernia surgery (including techniques of abdominal wall reconstruction)
  • Inguinal hernia repair (open and laparoscopic)
  • Upper GI endoscopy

The Covid-19 era provided significant challenges to elective surgical services in hospitals across the UK. During this time, Daniel set up a dedicated service for Inguinal Hernia Repairs under Local Anaesthetic – developing a streamlined service that expedited hernia repair for many patients, while minimising the additional risk posed by general anaesthesia and potential Covid infection.

Having recently returned to New Zealand again, Daniel now holds specialist consultant positions at Tauranga Public Hospital and Grace Hospital, and consults privately from the Tauranga Specialist Centre. His wide and thorough experience gained overseas enables accurate and comprehensive diagnoses and holistic care, with timely and appropriate management plans matched to each patient’s requirements.

Daniel enjoys teaching surgical skills to junior doctors and trainee surgeons, with particular attention to operative technique. He also has a passion for global surgery and the provision of quality surgical care to people living in developing nations. He has spent time working in West Africa as a junior doctor and as a consultant, involved in the provision of surgical care as well as in education and training.

Daniel, his wife, and their three children love living near the beach, enjoying cycling expeditions together and exploring the superb walks throughout the Bay.
