General, laparoscopic and thyroid surgeon at Grace Hospital, Tauranga, and Bay of Plenty District Health Board.

Jacques is a New Zealand-trained general surgeon with subspecialty training in thyroid and parathyroid diseases. In addition, he is the Trauma Medical Director for the Bay of Plenty DHB and performs a wide-range of general surgical procedures, including gallbladder, hernia, intestinal and skin surgery. He increasingly performs urgent lymph node biopsies for the haematology and oncology service at Tauranga Hospital.

He completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Cape Town and the world-famous Grootte Schuur Hospital, site of the world’s first heart transplant in 1967. Working in South Africa for a number of years, he gained experience in emergency and trauma surgery, before moving to New Zealand in 2007.

His surgical training in New Zealand covered all common general surgical problems, including thyroid and parathyroid pathology, hernias and diseases of the gallbladder, intestines, breast and skin cancers, including melanoma. After completing his training in New Zealand, he worked as a consultant in Auckland City Hospital, before completing subspecialty training in Breast, Thyroid and Parathyroid surgery in Auckland and Melbourne.

He attends multiple international surgical meetings annually and keeps abreast of developments in many areas of general surgery. His commitment to teaching medical students and junior doctors has been recognised and awarded by the General Surgeons of Australia through the Excellence in Surgical Teaching Award in 2019. He continues this practice here in Tauranga.

The emphasis in his practice is on quality and care. He recognises that the surgical process is often a daunting journey and considers it a privilege and professional duty to support his patients throughout that journey.

Jacques consults at Tauranga Specialist Centre and is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

When he is not working or exercising, you’ll find him on the beach with his family and disobedient cavoodle, Oscar, or running up the Mount, just because it’s there.
