Wouter-Jan Ten Cate

Wouter practises General otorhinolaryngology (ENT) for both children and adults. This includes tonsil and adenoid problems, hearing loss, chronic ear infections, nasal obstruction, snoring, sinus problems, hoarseness and other throat problems. Wouter has a special interest in ear surgery, including surgery for drum perforations, chronic ear infection, glue ear, otosclerosis, surfer’s ear and hearing improvement surgery.

After completing Medical School in the Netherlands, Wouter worked at the University of Florida in the Ear Research Laboratories, which led to a PhD degree. He then returned to Europe for his clinical ENT training in Essen, Germany. During this time he gained experience in the treatment of complex ear diseases. Subsequently, Wouter practised for five years in the Netherlands before moving to New Zealand in 2003. In New Zealand he worked in the Manukau Super Clinic and part-time in the Auckland Otology (Ear) group before moving to Tauranga in 2008. His private consulting room is at 8th Avenue Specialists, 60 Eighth Avenue, in Tauranga.

Wouter is an Honorary Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Auckland, which is associated with the Tauranga Hospital Clinical School. As such, he is actively involved in supervising and mentoring younger colleagues in clinical rotations at Tauranga Hospital as well as in research projects.

He also has a special interest in Community Health Care. While working in Auckland, Wouter undertook regular Community Ear Clinics for children in the South Auckland region. More recently, he has been involved in setting up a Community Ear Clinic in Kawerau.

“Over the last 19 years it has been my privilege to improve the quality of life of many children and adults who were affected by ENT problems. Helping people has been the most rewarding part of my work. During consultations there will be ample time to discuss symptoms, findings, treatment options and also to answer any questions. In this regard, I strongly support shared decision-making and personalised care to ensure the best possible outcome.”
