About

Andrew is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specializes in joint replacement surgery of the shoulder, hip and knee, as well as sports and arthroscopic reconstruction of the shoulder and knee, and hand surgery. He takes great pride not only in restoring function to patients who benefit from joint replacement surgery, but also in helping athletes return to play and compete at the highest level. Where possible, he offers a minimally invasive approach, such as endoscopic carpal tunnel release and arthroscopic reconstruction, to allow patients an early return to function.

Andrew trained in medicine at Otago University and completed his orthopaedic training at hospitals throughout New Zealand to gain his Orthopaedic Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). Following this, he travelled to Australia to complete sub-specialty training in all aspects of knee and sports surgery and surgery of the shoulder, elbow and hand. This has given him the ability to perform arthroscopic procedures from simple to complex (including ACL, PCL and meniscal reconstruction of the knee, and joint stabilization and rotator cuff repair of the shoulder). He performs joint-preserving surgery including osteotomy (limb realignment) and joint replacement surgery, including partial, total and complex revision joint replacement of the knee, and anatomic and reverse total joint replacement of the shoulder.

Since returning to practice, Andrew enjoys attending and contributing to meetings locally, nationally and internationally. He has been awarded the New Zealand Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon’s Travelling Fellowship allowing travel to multiple centres around Europe to gain and share experiences of shoulder surgery and bring back skills that benefit his patients.

He takes an active role in teaching at a local and national level, and teaches trauma skills throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Andrew enjoys supervising musculoskeletal training for medical students at the Bay of Plenty campus as an Honorary Lecturer of the Auckland Medical School. He contributes to the clinical governance at Grace Hospital as a member of the Medical Advisory Committee.

Andrew takes great pleasure in meeting and getting to know his patients. His goal is to achieve the optimal outcome for each patient’s circumstances and he takes time to listen, diagnose and explain the options available to restore function. He enjoys hearing stories about adventures completed and goals achieved, taking pride in watching athletes return to competition and supporting his patients in general as they return to activity.

Personally, Andrew understands the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between work and recreation. He is a keen runner, mountain-biker and paddler, and enjoys multisport and adventure racing. In particular, he takes special pleasure in spending time with his rapidly growing family and sharing experiences with them in the great outdoors in the Bay of Plenty and around New Zealand.
