Peter practises all aspects of general otorhinolaryngology for adults and children, with a special interest in rhinology (functional and cosmetic nasal surgery) and facial plastic surgery including skin lesions, otoplasty and rhinoplasty. He was an early adoptee of the external septorhinoplasty as a method of reconstruction for significant external deformity.
When it is possible, Peter uses minimally invasive techniques to limit trauma for his patients and to promote a swifter recovery from surgery. He also uses transcanal techniques for myringoplasty, tympanoplasty and removal of exostoses, if appropriate, as this allows much faster recovery for his patients.
Peter was born in Raetihi and raised in Hamilton. After graduating from Auckland Medical School, he completed his training in London, England and Vancouver, Canada, in Otolaryngology (Head and Neck Surgery) between 1980 and 1985. He undertook a short-term clinical fellowship in Otolaryngology at St Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, in late 1985. On his return to New Zealand, Peter was a Tutor Specialist at Dunedin Public Hospital in 1986 and a University of Otago clinical lecturer until he moved to the Bay of Plenty late that same year to take up a position as Consultant ENT surgeon at Tauranga Hospital.
A Fellow of both the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Royal Canadian College of Surgeons, Peter is also a member of the New Zealand Society of Otolaryngology (Head & Neck Surgery) and the InterAmerican Society of Paediatric Otolaryngology. He is a past Honorary Secretary of the New Zealand Society of Otolaryngology (Head and Neck Surgery), and a previous Secretary and Chairman of the Tauranga Hospital Senior Medical Committee. From 1993 to 2003, he was Head of the Otolaryngology Department at Tauranga Hospital.
After 30 years of service, Peter retains a part-time appointment at both Tauranga and Whakatane Public Hospitals, as he feels he has a commitment to the local population, as well as the next generation of doctors and future Ear Nose and Throat surgeons. He has a private consultant practice at 60 Eighth Avenue, Tauranga and consults at private clinics in Whakatane and Whangamata. He performs private surgery at Grace Hospital.
He pioneered the use of preoperative and postoperative patient information sheets soon after coming to Tauranga Public Hospital, and many of those information sheets are still the basis of the Otolaryngology information sheets in use in the Bay of Plenty today.
Peter is married with two married children. He has established and maintains a scholarship for underprivileged students in a small village in Thailand. He is a keen, but flawed, golfer.
