Dr Richard Speed is an experienced generalist gynaecologist with a special interest in prolapse and pelvic floor disorders. He makes sure his patients clearly understand all the information relevant to decisions about their health.
Richard spent his early life in Wellington, and trained at Otago Medical School. He undertook post-graduate training in South Africa and the UK, but always wanted to practise in the Bay of Plenty. He holds fellowships in New Zealand, Australia and the UK.
A consultant obstetrician gynaecologist at Tauranga Hospital for over 30 years, Richard is now mainly focusing on gynaecology, including colposcopy. He is a former clinical director and head of department and was president of the Bay of Plenty branch of the New Zealand Medical Association until this year.
Teaching medical students is one of Richard's passions. He is an honorary senior lecturer at Auckland Medical School and is responsible for the training of fifth-year medical students at Tauranga Public Hospital during their women's health module.
When it comes to patient care, Richard believes it is imperative that his patients take part in making decisions about their treatment. Providing appropriate information is the key. Patients have the right to expect their doctor to be empathetic and also decisive.
Richard is married with four adult children, three of whom work in the health sector. He and his wife have enjoyed taking part in the children’s school activities in Tauranga and in the sports and cultural clubs to which they have all belonged. The family has a long association with environmental projects and the Forest and Bird Society.
Richard plays tennis three times a week and is a current Rotarian and recent president of his club.
