Before he began his medical training, Bryan had completed a BSc in mathematics, and this interest led him to his sub-speciality in spinal surgery, and hip and knee joint replacement surgery within his General Orthopaedics practice. The inherent structural-mechanical nature of orthopaedics appealed to Bryan, requiring a practical understanding of mathematics with a similarly methodical application.
Bryan’s post-graduate orthopaedic training was based in Auckland with one year in Bristol, in the United Kingdom. He went on to develop his sub-specialty interest in spinal surgery with numerous attendances at national and international courses.
A past President of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association (2012), Bryan served two terms on the council of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association. He has also contributed his experience in local leadership roles, as intern supervisor at Tauranga Hospital for several years and Clinical Director of Orthopaedics at Tauranga Hospital. Currently, Bryan has a great interest in his work as an active board member of the Waipuna Hospice, Tauranga.
He places great importance on informing patients in clear detail about the options they might have in terms of managing their orthopaedic condition. When Bryan offers his patients advice, he recognises that spine surgery has a role, but a relatively small role, in managing the complexity of symptoms related to the spinal column. He acknowledges a particular interest in the close relationship of spinal orthopaedics, neurology, and neurosurgery. Where possible, Bryan finds models, x-ray imaging and references to relevant articles on internet sites very helpful for patients during their discussions about planned surgery.
Bryan’s recreational interests have included private pilot flying, and a few sporting activities. He still enjoys his weekly games of tennis and golf, together with recreational walking, family activities and other home interests.
